  1. I am currently trying to write my opinion paper on Astro Boy and I am stumped for topics to talk about. Is there any way you could point out some moments in the episode that would be good to put in the paper. So far all that I have come up with the Eastern vs Western opinion on robots being highlighted in the film. This is shown in the episode when Astro Boy still saves everyone despite being treated so poorly by humans when in Western animes he may have became evil.

    1. It sounds like you already have a good basis for your paper as you already presented two really good ideas, just flesh them out a little more and use examples from the episode to back them up.

You can always rewatch the episode with that in mind. I sometimes have to watch things two or three times myself.

  2. When writing our response papers, what sort of format do you want them in?
I know we have Times New Roman, 12, but what of the title and such?

    Thanks!

    1. You can title them if you want. I certainly don' require you to.

Just make sure the Header has the name, date and reaction paper in the right corner.

  3. Prof. Gill,

I had to work late tonight, can I possible email you my response paper? I cannot seem to find your e-mail anywhere. I am sorry I could not make it. Thank you!

    1. You can turn it in on Tuesday in hard copy form, just make sure that you label it as to why since this is the first response paper.

  4. Hello Prof.

I missed out on the Astroboy response paper from the second class, but when going over the syllabus I noticed you wrote we must complete 7 responses and there are more than 9 to be turned in. Does that mean I will not be penalized and I can just choose to turn in a later response? (So long as I have 7 total by the end of the semester?)

    1. You do not have to write about every filmic text we watch. You must choose 7. They are all to be turned in the class period after they the film is screened. For instance, Metropolis responses are due tomorrow. Summer Wars responses will be due on Thursday.

  5. Professor,
I was holding off on asking this for fear of it being a petty question, but it's silly of me not to ask because it held me from submitting the first response paper despite having attended class and even starting to write it...
So I was wondering, what level of formality do you want in our response papers? I understand it's not a review and it should have a relatively formal tone, but can we use "I", for example, or speak in any personal tone?
It's hard for me not to want to insert, say... my first feeling watching Metropolis compared to watching it as an adult.
Again--sorry, Professor, if this question comes off as petty but I'm having a bit of a hard time without asking it!

    1. I don't think your question is petty at all! I am glad you asked :3

I'd like some formality. Please don't use too much slang like "cool" or subjective judgements like "good" or "bad" in a paper.

You may use "I" but do so sparingly. A lot of times, I see people using "I" in other classes and it suddenly becomes very subjective and much more of a review because they continuously talk about what they do or do not like in whatever they are writing about.

You can definitely use "I" to compare and contrast engagement with Metropolis, comparing your original experience with watching it again as an adult.

  6. Professor,
I have had some car problems and it's currently in the shop, so I'm unable to come to class until it's fixed. I know that the papers are supposed to be due the class after we watch the selected film/show; however, due to this circumstance is there any way that I can bring in my response papers together when my car is fixed?

    Thanks in adavance,
    Zoey

  7. What episodes did we watch for Angelic Layer? I missed that class, but I still wanted to watch the episodes since it is in the same universe as Chobits. Thank you!

  8. Hey Professor,

    I have a bit of a dilemma.

I missed last class due to moving to a new house. We'll be finishing up today but I've been helping with the whole move. I managed to locate my laptop but we won't have the internet set up until the weekend. I'm actually doing this via a friend's smartphone. Also, still no luck finding the printer yet. Is it okay if I go on ahead and send the essays I have so far together in pdf form?

I also have a wisdom teeth extraction happening on June 11th which I know will be towards the end of the course. Would it be okay for digital submission then, too? I know the pain medicine they'll have me will put me out of commission in terms of driving.

Sorry and thank you for your time! @_@

    1. Ohhh! Exciting! And a lot of hard work!
      PDFs are welcome!
Digital Submissions are fine for everything except the final, which is due June 19th in class.

  11. So I'm knocking out the last of my papers this weekend. However, I'm a little confused on a few things:

    1) Is the final considered 1 of the 7 essays we have done? Or would it be counted as the 8th?
    2) When it comes to the final, I know some of us (myself included) have really bad handwriting. Would you still prefer it handwritten in one of those UCF greenbooks or a typed copy? Perhaps both handed in?

    1. The final is on the class blog and is completely separate from the essays.

It is not counted as a reaction paper, but the final.

You may type it If you like, which is why I posted it early

  12. Also, I too have really bad handwriting, so typing is always my go to for take home exams XD

  13. I'm writing my 7th paper but I'm a bit confused on the final submissions. You mentioned that we are allowed to submit the Animatrix reaction papers online. Is this only for extra credit papers or can I turn it in online and still be counted as 7th paper? Also you mentioned something about 5pm on Thursday. Are you referring to reaction papers being submitted online? If we turn in a hard copy, it's due at 6? lol thank you! :)

    1. Yep. I mean online reaction papers are due at 5. If you are turning in your 7th paper in class, it is due at 6 with the Final. You may use The Animatrix as a 7th Reaction paper, or if you have already done 7, it can be used as extra credit as an 8th.

  14. Hey, I couldn't find any email contact on the syllabus. So I hope this posting reaches you. I was searching for any films or documentaries that show behind scenes work inside any major animation studios. I was hoping you could recommend a few.
